When Modi and Amit Shah were deciding over the electoral strategy for 2019 they considered various issues as poll planks some of these were building the Ram Temple, development, Hindutva but finally they zeroed in on Nationalism. Much of the reflection of the duo has to do with how many seats pan India can the party influence using this poll strategy. The Nationalism formula was Atal Bihari  Vajpayee’s 1999 Lok Sabha election poll plank which was just after the Kargil War in May-July 1999. The war rhetoric with Pakistan won the Vajpayee led BJP 180 seats. Hence the nationalism plank and the success of Balakot strikes is made the centrepiece of this election.

The redux of 1999 just does not stop here soon after being elected Vajpayee carried out the nuclear test, this got him accolades domestically increasing his stature to a statesman. Well to replicate the same Modi carried out Mission Shakti announcing that India is a space superpower. While Vajpayee faced an economic slowdown and rising inflation ,Modi too has unemployment and a tottering economy to answer to but the template has been set to deflect the masses from harsh realities and set their mind on nationalism and space power. While Balakot is the template Modi- Shah know that all Hindus, muslims will not really come into the BJP fold with this card alone. Hence there is a plan B to keep harping on the communal card, Yogi Adityanath repeatedly uses that card in his rallies. In this election too BJP is hoping that ‘Hindu Khatre mein hai‘ card will work to scare the middle class Hindus who are moving away to Congress because of its development narrative.

While development and schemes for the poor has won Congress elections the same is not the experience of the BJP. The party while doing its brainstorming realised that development and welfare electoral pitch did not deliver Vajpayee a repeat victory. Insiders in the BJP say that party is not convinced about the performance of its own scheme on the ground. The India Shining experiment wherein infrastructure development did not get BJP a repeat mandate in 2004 is something that Modi- Shah want to avoid. Schemes like Mudra, Awas Yojana, PM Samman Nidhi, Ayushman Bharat or Fasal Bima Yojana are well intended but on the ground they are plagued with corruption. In Mudra and Awas Yojna only a fraction of the money reaches the actual beneficiary while Bima Yojna and Ayushman Bharat have been plagued with fraudulent premium collectors. So, corruption comes much before counting the success of the development narrative something that was promised to be kept a check on in 2014 elections.

Yet another strategy that Modi Shah have carved for the party in 2019 is being pugnacious to its rivals. Most of this is against the regional rivals like TMC, RJD, BJD. The belligerence as a tactic is being used to enter their states to take away a vital slice of their unrepresented votebank. Whether it is using CBI, Income Tax or ED the tactic is that of ‘we are coming to hunt you’ thereby deflecting from the Chowkidar Chor hai jibe that has inflicted great harm to their incorruptible image so carefully crafted. Whether it is Mamta, Mayawati, Congress leaders, or DMK the tactic is to use social media and speeches in public rally to defame opponents as thieves. Infact the strategy has boomranged in their face repeatedly – Amit Shah backtracking on Robert Vadra, the Sarda Valley scam also was quietened quickly because of alleged involvement of BJP leaders in Bengal and Assam, in case of raids on MP Chief Minister Kamal Nath’s aide nothing much was found and photoshopped images were circulated till such time a key man divulged that he is from the BJP!  Mayawati and Akhilesh both have already been handwrung by unleashing investigative agencies on them, hence Mayawati is more upset in her speeches with Congress and did not tieup include them in Gathbandhan.

This witchhunt strategy of the BJP is meant to enter the states on its own to give a message to the voter ‘do not go with a regional party we will take care of your aspirations’ so just vote for us and strengthen only one political party. This as against the Congress strategy that fostered regional parties because it wanted regional aspirations to be represented in its coalition govt . Will the voters really be convinced that only Modi led BJP will meet its regional aspirations ?  Besides what happens if BJP and its allies do not cross the 272 seats mark ? How will the bargain be driven by the same regional rivals who are tainted today ?

As the second round of polling winds up BJP has played its Hindus are victims card by announcing Sadhvi Pragya as a candidate from Bhopal. Her poll plank is only about wrongs being committed to Hindutva cause and that she is wrongly been framed . Here however Hindutva has crossed swords with Nationalism because Ashok Chakra decorated police officer Hemant Karkare actually died fighting terrorists and Sadhvi Pragya made unflinching statements that she had cursed him. An untutored Sadhvi Pragya has been caught on the wrong foot trying to trump Hindutva cause over a patriot . In playing this card Modi- Shah wanted to convince the Hindus that they have been wronged. But in what Sadhvi Pragya stated BJP has burnt more bridges instead of touching the raw nerve of the Hindus as was designed. If Modi started his poll campaign asking for votes in the name of 44 jawans killed in Pulwama, Sadhvi Pragya has undone it be actually condemning a hero thereby upsetting the carefully crafted nationalism strategy.

In days to come it is expected that Hindutva card will once again be played to polarise the voters. For now in creating Naya Bharat, Naya candidates have put BJP and its cadres in the docks. More candidates are likely to be announced in coming days it will be worth watching as to how the nationalism and Hindutva strategy plays out for the BJPand with all these cards if it can do a Vajpayee or even better as it has aimed for.
